  1. 1860-1929. US inventor of a mechanical
  2. tabulating machine, the first device for data
  3. processing. Hollerith's tabulator was widely
  4. publicized after being successfully used in
  5. the 1890 census. The firm he established, the
  6. Tabulating Machine Company, was later one of
  7. the founding companies of International
  8. Business Machines (IBM). After attending the
  9. Columbia University School of Mines,
  10. Hollerith worked on the 1880 US census and
  11. witnessed the huge task of processing so much
  12. information. In 1882 he became an instructor
  13. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
  14. where he developed his machine for counting
  15. and collating census data.
  16.
